This glossary is a collection of terms and definitions that are unique to the WordPress development community. These terms may have different meanings outside of WordPress and it’s usage. As such, the definitions provided here are specific to the WordPress platform.
An Action is a function hook within WordPress that triggers code routines to be run at certain times of the loading sequence.
A backlink is a link from website A to website B, usually done in some reference fashion giving the website credit.
A Category is a pre-defined taxonomy within WordPress. Taxonomies are used as a grouping mechanism to relate similar articles together.
A post status within WordPress the represents a post that is still being edited. Think of this as saved in the database, but not yet published to the public.
A WordPress excerpt is a summary of the article being referenced.
Multisite (MU) is a WordPress feature that allows you to run multiple individual blogs that are separate from each other but are run from the same backend.
A plugin is a collection of software that can be added to a WordPress website. The primary purpose is to extend or enhance the functionality of that WordPress site.
A WordPress theme is a collection of files that work together with the WordPress core routines to present a graphical interface and design for the designated WordPress website.
