Glossary Index

A website that is running a significant amount of content can utilize categories to logically group the sites content into appropriate sub-topics.  Instead of seeing the overall blogroll, users can view a categories archive page to view all articles associated with that category.

Categories and Tags are both taxonomies within WordPress.  Categories differ from tags in one important aspect.  Categories adhere to a hierarchy – meaning categories can be assigned as a child to another parent category.  Tags do not utilize a hierarchy structure and thus are all equally related.

As an example of the hierarchy, image a website dedicated to sharing recipes.  The first level of categories might be the main courses or meals typically served:

  • Breakfast
  • Dinner
  • Desserts

We can then expand the categories even further by providing more specific child categories:

  • Breakfast
    • Fast Preparation
    • Hearty
  • Dinner
    • Meats
    • Pastas
    • Soups
    • Salads
  • Desserts
    • Cakes
    • Pies
    • Cookies
