A website that is running a significant amount of content can utilize categories to logically group the sites content into appropriate sub-topics. Instead of seeing the overall blogroll, users can view a categories archive page to view all articles associated with that category.
Categories and Tags are both taxonomies within WordPress. Categories differ from tags in one important aspect. Categories adhere to a hierarchy – meaning categories can be assigned as a child to another parent category. Tags do not utilize a hierarchy structure and thus are all equally related.
As an example of the hierarchy, image a website dedicated to sharing recipes. The first level of categories might be the main courses or meals typically served:
